How To Save Money

Learning how to save money can take a big commitment.  If you don’t really want to learn how to save money you probably will not learn.   For most people saving money takes a total change.  The best way for you to learn how to save money is for you to find what fits you.  The best ways to save money are a set of general rules but you need to modify them to fit you.

We usually only think about how to save money at the end of the month and realize that we have no money to save.  This is why we need to learn how to save money on a daily basis.  Looking at the money we spend on a daily basis helps us to understand where we are spending our money and where we can cut back.

To do this we first need to find out where we are spending our money.  There are many tools for doing this, such as Quicken, Microsoft Excel, and numerous personal finance websites.  I find that the best way to make sure you track your money is to get a receipt for anything you pay for.  At the end of the day sit at your computer with your receipts and enter them into your software of choice.  At the end of the week you will have a very good idea of where you are spending your money.  It may surprise you.

In David Bach’s book The Automatic Millionaire: A Powerful One-Step Plan to Live and Finish Rich he talks about a powerful concept called the Latte Factor.  A quick summary of the Latte Factor is that a lot of people say they have no extra money to save and yet they get a nice latte every morning.  If you skipped this latte twice a week you could start saving right now.  We all need to find out what our latte is.  For me it was going out to lunch.  Here is the quick math.

Lunch cost about $10 a day
$10 x 5 days = $50 a week
$50 x 52 =  $2600 a year

This is not exact but you get the idea.  So cutting back to going out just once a week saves me about $2000 a year.

Your latte might now be just one thing, it might be many individual things but when they are added together you will see how much you could be saving.  If you want to learn how to save money you need to find out what are the best ways to save money for you.  Check out the next steps to get more ideas about how to save money and what will be best for you.
